Jacobs Family Tree
The Jacobs Family of Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany > USA
Original Surname and Ethnic Origin
George Franklin Jacobs, Adam's grandson and my great-grandfather, told my mother
that the family name was originally Jacobson and that "We were German Jews." To date, only the German part of that statement
has been verified; the rest will be proven or disproven as the research progresses.
Our Immigrant Family
Johann Adam Jacobs was a shoemaker from Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany. He was married three times,
each marriage producing issue. Collectively his children were:
Johann Bernhardt "Barney" Jacobs
Margrethe "Margaret" Jacobs
Johannes W. "John" Jacobs
Johann Nicklaus "Nicholas" Jacobs
Maria Anna "Mary Ann" Jacobs
Johann Adam "Adam Jr." Jacobs (descendants of George F. Jacobs, this is yours)
Margrethe Jacobs, perhaps Adam's twin.
Which children belonged to which wife? Here we had to make an educated guess,
subject to revision. But we do know that on 6 August, 1844, Adam, his third wife Charlotte, and the children named above
boarded the ship Goethe at the Port of Bremen, Germany and sailed into the port of Baltimore, Maryland on 19 September of that
year.
We can only imagine what emotions filled the hearts of our immigrant ancestors that day,
as they disembarked in Baltimore with all their worldly possessions. They were probably overwhelmed with excitement and hopes
for a bright future. The adults in the group likely felt a profound sense of relief too, knowing they and their children were forever free
of the dictates and whims of Louis the Second, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine. Here in this new land the Jacobs children would grow up free to
pursue their own destinies as they saw fit.
Settlement in the New World
Adam and Charlotte put down roots in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. It's no surprise that they
chose Pennsylvania, with its large German-speaking population, but why Franklin County? Did friends or family await them there?
Whatever the reason, they settled in and got busy, Adam making shoes, Charlotte making more babies.
Three of Adam's children who came over on the ship, John, Margaret and Adam Jr.,
remained in Pennsylvania, at least for a time. The other three, Barney, Nicholas and Mary Ann ventured further west and
settled in White County, Illinois. Successive generations migrated in all directions, and today Jacobs family members are
scattered from North Carolina to Hawai'i.
Piecing Together this Sprawling Family
From the beginning, I have been assisted by cousins in researching this line.
Lois Jacobs Woods (dec.), whose eyesight had already begun to fail in 1997 when I began, was eager to pass on to me everything
she knew and remembered about this line, and she put me in touch with her cousin Norma in West Virginia. From these and other
living cousins, I began collecting additional data.
The research continues today as I work with "Internet cousins," descendants
of the Goethe Jacobs children, to find and learn more about Adam's descendants in America and to trace our German roots. The
descendancy chart you see below is very much a work in progress.
Family Mysteries
Was Adam our only relation to immigrate to the U.S., or did others precede him? If so, who
were they and where did they settle?
What happened to Margaret the younger, who was the same age as Adam? She is not
listed on the next census, so she may have died aboard ship, or sometime between 1844 and 1850. She may have been Adam Jr.'s twin, we have seen
twinning in his line.
Why did Nicholas Jacobs sometimes use the surname Zopf (the German spelling; his children and others
spelled it Zoph)? I have two theories. With the passing of immigrant Adam in 1852, personal papers revealing true identities
likely surfaced. Such documents may have shown that Nicholas' real father was not Adam Jacobs but a former partner of his mother's,
a man named Adam Zopf. Or, papers may have revealed that Adam Jacobs himself was a child of a man back in Germany
named Adam Zopf and that he, Adam, was adopted into a family named Jacobs. Whatever the reason behind Uncle Nicky'a use of dual surnames,
it seems he had trouble making up his mind which one to use. You can view his
post-1852 pattern of changing surnames here.
Where and when did Nicholas die? The death date other researchers attribute to him is 27 March,
1911, at Evansville, Vanderburgh County, IN. Our Nicholas did marry a woman who lived in that state and town. But that 1911 death date
belongs to another Nicholas Zopf, the one who married a Catherina Bechthold and had children named August, Edward, George, Fred and
Katie. That Zopf family appears in the 1880 Census for Evansville, Vanderburgh County, IN and again in 1900 for the town of Pigeon,
Vanderburgh County, IN. I think we will find Nicholas' headstone in his own home state of Illinois, most likely in a church
graveyard in White County or perhaps on his farm there.
My line: Adam > Adam > George > Anna
This descendancy chart, a work in progress, was compiled from
both proven and unproven sources. It may contain errors. As with any family tree,
you should regard it as a guideline for your own genealogical research.
Hope you find your ancestors here!
